What is it like to be an expert witness in a guardianship hearing where an elderly man's mental competency is being challenged and his ability to make decisions is in danger of being taken away? How can one woman sort through challenging family dynamics, a possible misdiagnosis, and fight for justice for her client all while tangled up in a chilling murder mystery? Karen Knutson, a former nurse practitioner and care manager, answers these questions in her debut mystery novel, Expert Witness, published by Warren Publishing.

Protagonist Elle Larson, a nurse practitioner and geriatric care business owner, finds herself immersed in courtroom chaos as she finds an elderly client, Charlie blackwell, comatose from a fentanyl overdose. What started as a typical day on the job quickly becomes the most difficult case of her career as she discovers this attempted murder. As Elle starts poking around, nothing seems to add up, people are not who they seem, and secrets begin to emerge about prior deception and abuse toward her client. Elle now must secure a fair trial for Charlie - and save both of their lives in the process.

From the Author...

"I knew that ageism in our society was long-standing. But it was rarely acknowledged in medicine. I did not realize the level of exploitation and mortality until I worked with attorneys and had the experience of being an expert witness as a care manager."

- Karen Knutson
